<p>Whenever you get a new job, move to a new city or make a similar life transition, people often ask: How did you get here? That got me thinking. <strong>Are you ever here?</strong> I think we spend too much time trying to arrive, when every point that we’re at along the path is the right spot, always and forever.</p>
<p>We — specifically, Millennials in their 20s and 30s — spend too much time trying to force our lives into a preset timetable or a predetermined journey that’s created by what we presume is “success.” And that stops us from letting coincidences take us to the best point in our lives that we could be in in that precise moment. And eventually, I think that’s why so many people in my age demographic are unsettled, unhappy and unsure of themselves.</p>
<p>Our lives are ruled by coincidences if we let them happen — <strong>little miracles</strong> that perpetually point the way according to who we are in the moment. Right now, I’ve never been happier in terms of who I am, what I do for a living and where I may or may not be going. But if I’d scheduled or forced my life into the path that I thought was “right” for me five years ago — or 15 years ago — I’d be in a completely different universe.</p>
<p>Today, I took time to plot out major life-changing actions/decisions that occurred all the way back to when I was six or seven. Every single thing that has led me to this point has been a random decision, a chance encounter and a coincidental choice. Literally. I could go into in-depth detail and you’d truly see how random everything has been, but to put it broadly: a random farm book led me into writing as a hobby; a side remark in a conversation caused me to switch universities at the last moment; and stumbling upon someone else’s Facebook status created a shift in my actual career.</p>
<p><strong>Try to live without a forced plan.</strong> I’m not saying that you should live recklessly, running around without goals or ideals. But it is important to keep an open mind and allow coincidences to shift you into new opportunities as they arise instead of struggling against the coincidental.</p>
<p>Being available, flexible and open frees you to be happy and satisfied right here, <strong>right now</strong>, instead of reaching for some satisfaction or happiness in the nonexistent future that depends on your artificially predetermined, yet-still-untraveled, journey.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Three ways to take back control of a stressful, anxious day. ]]></description>
				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-365" title="monks" src="http://livehealthmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/monks.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="199" />Don&#8217;t let the worries and busyness of the day pull you away from yourself. </strong></p>
<p>Staying &#8220;grounded&#8221; and being self-aware in every moment isn&#8217;t something reserved for monks or New Age gurus. As school, work, family and other daily obligations tug and pull at your strings, it&#8217;s easy to lose your sense of balance. This opens you up to increased stress and anxiety, often over things that truly don&#8217;t matter and issues that you can&#8217;t change or control. By learning to find the positive in every situation, and discovering how to release the worries of both the past and the future, you can function at a higher, happier level in the here-and-now. And you don&#8217;t even need to chant an <em>om</em>. No New Age BS required!</p>
<p><strong>1. Recognize the positives.</strong></p>
<p>Often, when things get away from us, all we see in our narrow field of vision are the negatives glaring back. Counter this by naming ten positive things in your life, counting them on the fingers of each hand. It might be hard once you hit fix or six items, but that&#8217;s the whole point. It will force you, even in the most stressful of situations, to dig deep and find something positive — sometimes, something so small that you overlooked it before.</p>
<p><strong>2. Recognize that this is it.</strong></p>
<p>When our minds wander from the present moment, we start working on autopilot. That&#8217;s when negative patterns, stresses and habits become ingrained. Steer yourself back to the moment by telling yourself, &#8220;This is it.&#8221; This. This moment right here. Not the past, which has no bearing on now. And not the potential things in the future that &#8220;could&#8221; go wrong, because the future doesn&#8217;t exist. In fact, the future will never exist, so why worry?</p>
<p><strong>3. Recognize your emotions.</strong></p>
<p>The final step — after becoming more aware of your positives and recognizing that this moment is all that counts — is recognizing your emotions. When you&#8217;re sad, angry, frustrated or feeling similar emotions, they often entrap our spirits and take on a life of their own. All of a sudden, you&#8217;re just angry. ANGRY! Beyond all rationale and thought. Instead, look at yourself. Ask, &#8220;What is going through my mind?&#8221; Then ask, &#8220;What emotions am I feeling?&#8221; There is a difference. The intellect is often aware of an actual primary stressor. Say, a late assignment in university. But your emotions are completely subjective. Learn to see that a situation may be unpleasant, but you have control over your response. Take a deep breathe, recognize that you may be facing a painful or stressful moment, but learn to greet and release those negative emotions.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Stress increases your odds of dying early by 50 percent!]]></description>

<p><strong>The holidays can be stressful. Start the new year off to a calmer, more peaceful start.</strong></p>
<p>Fifty percent. Fifty! That&#8217;s how much your odds of dying young increase when you&#8217;re continuously stressed, according to a study conducted by Oregon State University and published in 2011 in the<em> Journal of Aging Research</em>. If that doesn&#8217;t stress you out, I don&#8217;t know what will.</p>
<p>As you enter the new year, the stress of Christmas shopping and family gatherings starts to fade and is replaced by the usual day-to-day stresses that many of us face. What will my boss think of my TPS report? How do I stick with my New Year&#8217;s dieting resolution? Why hasn&#8217;t my girlfriend said &#8220;I love you&#8221; yet?</p>
<p>This year, take control of your adrenal glands and tell stress to suck it.</p>
<p><strong>How Stress Affects Our Bodies</strong></p>
<p>When you&#8217;re stressed, your body pumps itself full of hormones and chemicals. This can lead to a weaker immune system, increased risk of heart disease, and packing on more fat around your abdomen. Love handles? More like &#8220;stress handles.&#8221; And stress affects everyone, all around the world. For example, the American Institute of Stress calls it America&#8217;s #1 health problem, while Statistics Canada reports that approximately six million Canadians label their lives &#8220;extremely stressful.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Four Ways to De-Stress</strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Exercise.</strong> Get moving! Exercise boosts your body&#8217;s natural stress buffers by increasing the levels of norepinephrine in your brain in the areas of your brain that helps handle and cope with stress. Plus, it also helps you blow off the proverbial steam and release tension in your muscles.</p>
<p><strong>2. Leave work at work.</strong> Set boundaries so that external stress factors don&#8217;t start creeping into your home. When you&#8217;re at work, create &#8220;me&#8221; time by setting aside 10 to 15 minutes of space every hour or so during which you leave your desk or cubicle. And don&#8217;t bring work home with you, nor any of the other negative, external factors that can cloud your life. Home should be a peaceful sanctuary. Defend it like a rabid Greenpeace activist.</p>
<p><strong>3. Try supplements.</strong> The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine recommends 5-HTP, a supplement made from the seeds of the Griffonia simplifolia plant, as well as GABA supplements. Of course, talk to your doctor before trying to self-medicate any stress symptoms in your life.</p>
<p><strong>4. Take a deep breath.</strong> During stressful situations, your breath often becomes shorter and quicker. This results in mild hyperventilation and a reduction of oxygen in your system, which in turn leads to more stress. Take a deep breath, hold it for a couple seconds, then exhale. Repeat this five or six times. Alternatively, try doing the traditional ardha kurmasana (half tortoise) yoga pose, which brings your head below your heart and helps reduce anxiety and stress. In fact, almost any kind of yoga or meditation has been proven in numerous studies to counter the health effects of stress and anxiety.</p>
<p>By finding liberty from your stress, you have more freedom to pursue the things in life that create positive feelings and emotions in your universe.</p>
